Stunning actress Cate Blanchett was always an old-school beauty. The kinda sultry dame that Hemingway would've swooped down to Cuba in a heartbeat to wine and dine.

That said, imagine our surprise when the 37 year-old showed up at last night's gala celebrating the work of French designer Paul Poiret looking utterly skeletal.

With her collarbones protruding and looking painfully thin, her gaunt appearance startled onlookers as she strolled down the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

As one observer noted, "Perhaps it was just an unfortunate trick of the light, but her shoulders and chest were all bony while her collarbones looked really prominent."

What's more, her striking scarlet make-up or her swept-up hair, piled up into a bun, looking thin and wispy — often a tell-tale sign of dramatic weight loss.

Let's hope she packs it on soon. C'mon, Cate... Eat a sandwich!
