SLY STALLONE'S 'THE EXPENDABLES' - A SCRIPT REVIEW

"Vern" over at Ain't It Cool managed to get his hands on a script for the upcoming Sly Stallone actioner "The Expendables." This one seems like a big deal since it also stars Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Forest Whitaker and Randy Couture.

It centers on a ragtag team of a group of elite mercenary badasses.

We're so there ...

Here's part of the review:

"Barney is a very different character from Rambo. For one thing, his name is Barney. For another he talks in more than one sentence sometimes. He's almost a father figure to the team and finds himself always listening to other people's problems and trying to be supportive. The other character who gets the most screen time is the lovelorn Lee Christmas. He's supposed to be American but calls a guy "mate" at one point, which means he's played by Jason Statham. There's also Kong Kao, who will be played by Jet Li. He does alot of kicking, but is much more of a supporting character than Li usually plays. I do think it's a pretty good character for Li, though, because he gets some funny lines. He's an unhappy smartass, not the usual Li type of character."

STALLONE, STATHAM, LI TEAM UP FOR 'THE EXPENDABLES'

Here in the Lounge, we're suckers for anything Sly Stallone-related. This bit of news hit the Web today and to say we're stoked is an understatement.

Sylvester Stallone will direct a new action film titled "The Expendables," which he also penned. The flick will star Sly as well as Jason Statham, and Jet Li. While story details are sort of mum, it centers on an “expendable” team, hired to do jobs that no one else can or will, who are sent to infiltrate a South American country to overthrow the ruthless dictator and liberate the country.

The film is said to be a part of a two-picture deal Sly inked with with Nu Image/Millennium Films. Principal photography is set to begin in Costa Rica and Louisiana in February 2009.

NO! NO! NOOOO! MGM TO MAKE MORE ROCKYs??

Highly unnecessary! That's all I can say.

This lil' bit of news is all over the interwebs today. During a recent presentation at the Cannes Film Festival, MGM chairperson Mary Parent said that that the company is toying around with the possibility of making more Rocky films. WTF???

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm a HUGE Sly Stallone fan and an even bigger Rocky Balboa fan. There's no way I can endorse another Rocky film after last year's "Rocky Balboa" beautifully ended the character's 30 year saga.

Parent’s big buzzword of the Cannes presentation was “franchise." She's not off her rocker when it comes to that notion, however. After all, let's not forget that after Bond, MGM's biggest franchise is the Rocky series. She contends The Rock just might have some more fight in him before he calls it quits for good. C'mon...

It's more than apparent that MGM doesn't give a hoot that "Rocky Balboa," the sixth film in the series, was the perfect conclusion and the utmost penance for the atrocious "Rocky V."

Even more, I can't imagine Stallone will want to throw Rock back into the ring. I wouldn't even expect his kid to hit the canvas. Many will remember that Robert, Jr. (played in "Rocky Balboa" by Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia), resembled bookish Adrian more than his beefy dad.

A spinoff -- that's what MGM should be concentrating on. A spinoff with perhaps a cameo by Sly. That might be doable. I could see a "Steps" story - 'Lil Marie's teenage son who entered Rocky's circle. But please, MGM, NO MORE ROCKY FILMS!!

RAMBO MAY BE BACK FOR FIFTH FILM

Over at Deadline Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein hinted that another "Rambo" sequel is already planned and will involve bringing the character back to the United States.

The comments come after the latest (and fourth) "Rambo" film opened to a solid but unspectacular $18.1 million and second place spot over the weekend.

Despite "Rambo III" taking in $53m domestic back in 1988 - an amount this "Rambo" isn't expected to top despite two decades of inflation - Weinstein is bullish over its economic prospects. Perhaps the retro factor of the character and all the kick-booty nostalgia may resonate with fans.

Weinstein's hopes lie in the international market as the "Rambo" films, like the James Bond series, have consistently made 75% of their profit overseas - a quite different margin than other action franchises like superhero films or the Jason Bourne series which earn notably more domestically than internationally.

Yet analysts predict Harv may be disappointed with global totals considering the political climate change in the past two decades, and the anti-American sentiment (or more specifically the anti-Bush sentiment) that has pervaded even other Western cultures in the post-Iraq environment.

Even more interesting, is that the other day, Sly dropped a hint that he'd love to take the green beret into another realm. Perhaps supernatural? Perhaps alien?

Whatever the case, we're on board.

RAMBO vs. ALIEN, vs. PREDATOR, vs. FREDDY??

Just as he did with last year's "Rocky Balboa," Sly Stallone is answering a ridiculous amount of fan questions over at the web site Ain't It Cool News. If you're a Sly fan, you MUST check it out.

Interestingly, though, when one fan inquired about his common admission that he’d like to continue the Rambo franchise beyond this new film, the fourth in the series, here’s what Stallone said...

"I truly can’t tell you yet because I think it would be bad luck, but I think a challenge would be to take the character which has been perceived mostly in a realistic vein and add another element of the surreal that would actually take the audience into a slightly different genre. It’s not like I’m going to turn it into a full on Broadway musical starring the Muppets, but it is ambitious."

With all of the crossovers these days in comic, films and even video games, I bet the studio would love to see a Rambo vs. Predator or Alien. How cool would that be?

SLY TO REMAKE 'DEATH WISH'

In November of 2007, MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands indicated that Sly Stallone was tentatively attached to write, direct and star in a remake of the 1974 film starring Charles Bronson. Stallone didn't confirm that he was proceeding with the film, but indicated to the web site IGN that he had an idea how to make the update relevant.

"I think Death Wish, if it were done today, would be volcanic," Stallone said. "The idea of Jeff Goldblum being a mugger who breaks into an apartment is very simplistic. It gives you an idea how bad the elevation of violence has become. I would focus on defense attorneys, I would focus on [the people] allowing this crap to happen -- not so much the guy on the street. It's like, 'Who permits it?'
