ROBERT DOWNEY ON SET PIC FROM 'IRON MAN 2'

So "Iron Man 2" is currently shooting in La La land, specifically at Randy’s Donuts in Inglewood, a more-than-famous LA landmark.

geek news: Samuel L. Jackson, reprises his role as Nick Fury will burst onto the scene and scream at Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), who will be laying in the middle of the gigantic donut on the roof.

The above pic comes from People.com and features Downey dressed partly in his Iron Man gear, laying in the donut hole in between shots.

Screenrant gives the scoop about the armor: “The gauntlets are much beefier on top of his hands, there are some gold highlights in the rib cage area and the chest piece looks redesigned as well. Looks like the tricep area is beefed up along with the shoulders, too, giving the impression (to me, anyway) of a more powerful armor.”

FIRST PIC OF ROBERT DOWNEY JR. IN 'IRON MAN 2' (FIRST LOOK)

Big props to USA TODAY, who managed to snag a first peek at Iron Man 2.

It's closer than we think. A sequel to last summer's blockbuster, which began shooting a mere three weeks ago will open next May and takes place just six months after Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark revealed his identity as Iron Man.

Interestingly, the development is playing out with unexpected results, says director Jon Favreau. "How many superheroes are open about their true identities?" he asked in USA Today. "We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences — in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore."

Even though he's sending dispatches via Twitter (one of the few Hollywood directors to utilize the technology) from the set. He hopes to have all other details locked down. "It's never easy with summer movies, but we're trying to keep as much a surprise as possible," he says.

What exactly does THAT mean? Well, I'd guess we're getting no new dirt on replacing Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle, or how the crime-fighting team S.H.I.E.L.D. will ultimately come together. Or how he'll work in new characters. Among those signed on for this go-round are Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer.

Favreau also said that tackling the franchise a second time is easier because he knows the landscape. Something else would help, too: "I really enjoyed when we were a dark horse and no one knew much about us. ... I hope we can find that place again."

MICKEY ROURKE IN 'IRON MAN 2'

Hot news all over the web this week... Actors Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are in talks with Paramount honchos to star as different villains in the Iron Man sequel.

Rourke, currently undergoing a critical resurgence for his incredible performance in "The Wrestler," would play the Crimson Dynamo. In the Marvel comic, he is a heavily tattooed Russian arms dealer who battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor that can control electricity.



The character is tricked into defecting to the US and went to work for Stark, forcing the Soviets to send KGB assassin Black Widow after him. What's interesting here is that the Black Widow character has also been rumored to appear in the sequel.

Meanwhile though it's not confirmed, Rockwell is tipped to be playing Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire British businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark.

LOST 'IRON MAN' SCENE LEAKED

"Iron Man" is set to land on DVD next month and one of the deleted scenes has been released via Access Hollywood. The three-and-a-half minute sequence shows what happens when Tony Stark wants to throw a last minute party at his house in Dubai. This sequence gives an answer to a plot hole some had, because Stark can’t fly from California to the Middle East in the suit, as it would be technologically impossible.

ROBERT DOWNEY DISSES 'DARK KNIGHT'

Wow. Talk about your throw-downs. Robert Downey, Jr., star of the summer's first unstoppable superhero flick, virtually bitchslapped (been using that word way too much lately) "The Dark Knight." If you read between the lines, it's interesting. "Iron Man" to most was exactly what it set out to be -- a balls-to-the-wall, action-packed, superhero origina tale that worked brilliantly. As much as I dug it, I can see where "The Dark Knight" might have come off as pretentious. Anyway, here's what he had to say to Moviehole.

“The Dark Knight. My whole thing is that that I saw The Dark Knight. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I loved The Prestige but didn’t understand The Dark Knight. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so fucking smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what? Fuck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.”

'SPEED RACER' - THE FIRST 7 MINUTES! (video)

First off, let me apologize for the lack of posts. I must attribute it to my lack of sleep. In any case, I'll make up for it now... It's not exactly a secret that this weekend's "Speed Racer" is tracking poorly with audiences. Warner Bros., quivering in their boots no doubt, has posted the films first seven minutes via Yahoo!.

While my expectations for the film aren't all that high, I will say that the first seven minutes were enough to make me want to keep watching - maybe that's the point. It has a dazzling visual style I haven't seen on film since Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers" or even "Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2." Sadly, though, if I do venture out this weekend to the movies, it will be for last week's overperforming "Iron Man" which seems to have hit the mark with everyone.

Still, enjoy this little dazzler for the time being...

VARIETY'S 'IRON MAN' REVIEW

OK ... The reveiws for "Iron Man" are starting to trickle in and the first one out of the gate is Variety's positive review.

Finally, someone's found a sure-fire way to make money with a modern Middle East war movie: Just send a Marvel superhero into the fray to kick some insurgent butt. The powerhouse comicbook-inspired actioner "Iron Man" isn't principally about this fantasy, but it won't hurt at least American audiences' enjoyment of this expansively entertaining special effects extravaganza. Having an actor as supercharged as Robert Downey Jr. at the center of such a tech-oriented enterprise reps a huge plus, and Paramount should reap big B.O. rewards by getting out ahead of the summer tentpole pack with such a classy refitting of an overworked format.

REMEMBER THIS? 'IRON MAN' '60s TOON

Being that this is "Iron Man" week, I figured it would be more than apropos to post the opening theme to the original cartoon, which originally aired 1966/67. Gotta love how crude it looks. Watching it now, it's certainly hard to believe that I was entranced for hours on end. Enjoy. Oh, and also enjoy that Henry Mancini-esque theme which, by the way, won't get out of your head.

When I first heard that Robert Downey, Jr. would be playing Tony Stark aka Iron Man in next summer's big screen incarnation, I must admit, I thought it was an odd choice.

Not a bad one, mind you, but just plain odd. Sorta like when I first heard that Michael Keaton would be Bruce Wayne/Batman. Casting perfection or just plain odd?

So, fresh off the heels of the recently leaked "Iron Man" shots comes this new hi-res pic of Robert Downey, Jr. as industrial billionaire Tony Stark. One look at Downey as the billionaire alcoholic and I must admit, I get the feeling he's gonna to hit it home. BTW, thanks to Superhero hype, once again.

Dead solid perfect. Kudos to whoever called that friggin' shot.

A very, very Hemingway-esque shot, indeed. Papa H would approve.

IRON MAN CAUGHT ON TAPE (VIDEO)

IESB.net has just posted the first video footage of the Iron Man suit.

A bit of background: The early word on the garb, to be worn by Robert Downey, Jr. (as well as stuntmen) was that it was way too bulky and looked like a combination of a Power Ranger and Robo-Cop.

According to our IESB scoopers, this Iron Man was walking with ease through the set and at one point was even goofing off and tap dancing. All in all, the orange and red suit looked fabulous.

FINAL 'IRON MAN' SUIT REVEALED (BEAUTIFUL)

My buds at GEEKS OF DOOM posted this and I couldn't resist having The Lounge weigh in.

I'll be the first to admit that Iron Man ain't exactly my favorite hero. But the project is interesting to me, namely for the casting of Robert Downey, Jr. and the helming by Jon Favreau.

Downey is one of our best actors today and Favreau, well, is the brainchild behind "Swingers," one of my favorite films.

So, that said, I'll be giving "Iron Man" a gander or two.

After posting a pic last week (via USA Today), Entertainment Weekly is giving us a look at the hero's cybernetic Mark III suit.

Created by Oscar-winning F/X master Stan Winston, the red and gold armor is the spitting image of the comic-book counterpart.

As usual, though, the star wasn't exactly thrilled with donning the suit. “Robert was very bullish on wearing the suit whenever possible," Favreau says. "Now I don’t know if he’s such a fan of that idea.”

In the film, Downey stars as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark, who creates the high-tech armor to fight villains after suffering a life-threatening heart injury in war-torn Afghanistan.

The tentpole flick will also feature the Marvel superhero’s Mark I gray armor as well as the trademark red and gold suit.

Look for it in theaters May 2, 2008.

Is everyone ready for a kick-ass Iron Man?

Hope so, because Robert Downey Jr. has been hunkified for his portrayal of the famed Marvel superhero in next year's big screen version - a film role originally tapped for Tom Cruise.. Pictures popped up all over the Interweb today after USA Today ran a pic of Downey as Tony Stark.

Undoubtedly, Downey's an interesting choice to play Stark -- aka Iron man. Why?

Well, for starters, the playboy-billionaire-industrialist has long suffered in his battle with the bottle. Plus, it's no secret that Downey himself fought demons as Hollywood's poster boy for wretched excess, eventually serving a year in prison on drug and alcohol-related charges and checking in and out of rehab.

Luckily, however, all that's behind the Oscar-nominated thesp."We didn't want to just go with a safe choice," Favreau told USA Today. "The best and worst moments of Robert's life have been in the public eye. He had to find an inner balance to overcome obstacles that went far beyond his career. That's Tony Stark. Robert brings a depth that goes beyond a comic-book character who is having trouble in high school, or can't get the girl. Plus, he's simply one of the best actors around."

For his role as Stark, Downey is trying to become a real-life iron man. At 42, he lifts weights five days a week and practices martial arts to get in shape to play the hard-bodied Stark, an arms manufacturer who uses his ultimate weapon, a jet-powered, missile-launching suit of armor, to fight evil.
