GOOD NEWS: BRAFF OUT OF NEW 'FLETCH'

Is it me or is Zach Braff the most overrated actor on the planet? I know he's a hyphenate and all ... but ... who cares?

In any case, the "Scrubs" star won't be playing the title role in the forever in-development "Fletch Won," reports IGN Movies.

I'll give you a sec to regain your composure.

OK ... Think back to the '80s. He may seem kinda dorky now, but Chevy Chase was 'The Man' as investigative reporter Irwin Fletcher. Any remake would have to have a leading man with brass ones.

Based on the Gregory McDonald series of novels, the books were extremely successful and obviously, Hollywood noticed. They were quickly optioned around the mid- to late-'70s but the scribe had the option of approving the actor cast to play Fletch. He rejected the likes of Burt Reynolds and Mick Jagger (can you fucking imagine?).

When the studio mentioned Chevy Chase as Fletch, McDonald (even though he had never really seen Chase in anything) agreed. Good move.

Flash forward. "Scrubs" producer Bill Lawrence, is penning and directing "Fletch" and recently confirmed to TV Guide that "Zach is writing and directing his own film ['Open Hearts'] at Paramount," which has caused a scheduling conflict forcing Braff out.

Uh, someone should remind Braff that even the most appealing TV actors often don't make it on the big screen. They just don't.

In over 20 years, to my knowledge, only two dudes have done it - a Mr. Bruce Willis and about a decade later, one George Clooney.

Oh sure, there have been those who tried. Some even had minor success. But Zach, try to remember that even these huge -- dare I say hunky actors -- tried to make the leap, but didn't quite make it - David Caruso, Tom Selleck, Don Johnson, Jason Priestly and Luke Perry.

There are lots more. You can look it up. Got it?

Good. Now let's get down to brass tacks. The Lounge suggests "My name Is Earl" actor Jason Lee (at left). I know his name was thrown about before, I believe when Kevin Smith was attached to the project but ... who knows? Who cares? If he wants more scratch, give it to 'em.

Another great choice? Jay Mohr (below). Not a huge name per se, but if you want tons of 'tude served with your dish of Fletch, he's the guy. What's more, he's been his fair share of flicks.

As for director Lawrence? He's currently in New York searching for a new Fletch. Braff and Lawrence will reunite this August to shoot the final season of "Scrubs."
