'QUANTUM OF SOLACE' REVIEWS - EARLY BUZZ NOT ALL THAT POSITIVE

Hmmm, we're sorta bummed about this. It seems that many of the London papers and tabs are exactly thrilled by the new James Bond flick. And while most of them agree that Daniel Craig is pretty damn awesome as 007, the film doesn't hit the mark in the manner that "Casino Royale" did.

Times Online: “It’s James Bond, licence to bore. Quantum of Solace may be a sequel to Casino Royale but it lacks that movie’s panache and brio.” … “Bond is a boorish oaf who simply rushes from country to country with the manic speed of Jason Bourne, including sequences shot in Panama, Chile, Italy, Mexico and Austria, in a plot about holding a country to ransom over its water supply. Quantum of Solace lacks any wit, ironic or otherwise, which has been a strength of so many 007 films.” … “At around one hour 40 minutes, this Bond is shorter than most. Somehow it felt longer.”

The Guardian: “This didn’t excite me as much as Casino Royale and the villain is especially underpowered.” … “This is a crash-bang Bond, high on action, low on quips, long on location glamour, short on product placement.” … “I was disappointed there was so little dialogue, flirtation and characterization in this Bond: Forster and his writers Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade clearly thought this sort of sissy nonsense has to be cut out in favor of explosions. Well, perhaps that is what Bond fans want (not this Bond fan, though). But I was also baffled that relatively little was made of the deliciously villainous Amalric”.

The Telegraph: “…owes much to the quick-fire editing of the Bourne thrillers.” … “In this much darker film” … ” For half an hour or so after the pre-credits ‘teaser’, the film barely lets up.” … “And then, the pacing becomes more fractured. One wonders if director Marc Forster and screenwriters Paul Haggis and Neal Purvis haven’t tried a little too hard to distance the film from traditional Bond plots. The expository dialogue scenes can be dull, and cram in so many machinations and double-crossings that it’s easy to lose track of who’s duping whom. And yet, several times - just when you’re tempted to consult your watch - the movie suddenly surprises.”

The Daily Mirror: “Quantum of Solace is a leaner, meaner animal, rammed with shoot-outs, a boat chase and even an aerial dogfight. And our hero is an angry, embittered man out for blood. Mostly it doesn’t feel like a Bond film at all. Not once does Craig say: “The name’s Bond. James Bond.” There’s no Q or his gadgets. Heck, we even see Bond in a cardigan. There are no risque quips or arched eyebrows.” … “It doesn’t disappoint - just don’t expect the brilliance of Casino Royale.”

ARE WE REALLY SUPPOSED TO FEEL BAD??

Are we really supposed to feel bad for OPEC?? With the stock crisis, most Americans don't have a pot to piss in, much less a window to throw it out of and we're supposed to feel empathy for these billionaire scoundrels who manipulate the world's oil production to their advantage??

Via The International Herald Tribune:

Oil prices plummeted Thursday, falling below $70 a barrel for the first time in 16 months, prompting the OPEC oil cartel to call for an emergency meeting next week.

The rapid decline in prices had alarmed both petroleum company executives and oil producers, who are becoming increasingly nervous that oil's roller-coaster ride undermines the stability of energy markets.

Oil prices have dropped sharply in recent weeks amid the economic crisis and lower consumption in developed nations. In New York, oil futures fell as much as 8 percent to $68.57 a barrel Thursday, their lowest level since June 2007. Oil has lost half its value since hitting a record $147.27 a barrel in July.

'INGLORIOUS BASTERDS' PITT PIC LEAKED

Empire Magazine recently printed the first glimpse of Brad Pitt in Quentin Tarantino’s "Inglourious Basterds" BTW, I'm not dopey, that's the way they spell it.

In the WWW II flick, Pitt plays Lt. Aldo Rain (aka Aldo The Apache), a leader of a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds." The death squad is on a mission to track down, scalp, and viciously kill Nazis in an attempt to spread fear among the Third Reich.

A WWII Tarantino flick... Can't frikkin' wait!

McCAIN NEEDED A NASHUA MOMENT

While I'm high (sort of) on wacky meds for my Bronchitis, one thing is certain. John McCain needed a "Nashua moment" in last night's debate -- a split-second where he projects that he has brass balls. In the end, that what the country needs from him. Stature, confidence... It's all about being presidential.

Unclear? Watch this...

It was a single symbolic act that dramatized the the debut of Ronald Reagan's new image as a bold, standout candidate and the demise of George Bush's presidential hopes.

It occurred during what was scheduled to be a two-person debate between Bush and Reagan in Nashua, New Hampshire, on February 23, 1980, the Saturday before balloting. As it turned out, Bush crumpled under pressure orchestrated by Reagan's camp.

When the moderator ordered Reagan's mic turned off, Reagan responded, "I'm paying for this microphone, Mr. Green." The fact that the moderator's name was Breen seemed to matter little -- the crowd cheered.

It was with that single solitary act, Reagan's prospects had been boosted, Bush's buried. Reagan carried New Hampshire 50% to Bush's 23%.

ROBERT DOWNEY AS 'SHERLOCK HOLMES' (LEAKED

Major props for Just Jared for posting these first pics of Robert Downey, Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in Guy Richie's take on the super sleuth. At first we thought it coulda been an outtake from his "Chaplin" biopic.

We're told that Anthony Peckham’s script is based on a mixture of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic tales and the Lionel Wigram comic book adaptation which presents a more active version of the famous detective.

Jude Law stars as Holmes’ trusted colleague Dr. Watson. Rachel McAdams (yowzza!) is Irene Adler, Sherlock’s love interest. Mark Strong is on board to play the villain Blackwood.

BAT SIGNAL TAKEN HOSTAGE? SUPERMAN or BIZARRO??

This one is too cool not to post. Thanks to Slashfilm for tipping everyone off.

Looks like someone was tampering with the Bat Signal. Was it Big Blue himself? We think not! Look at the symbol. If it were truly Superman, the 'S' would be inverted.

We say it's Bizarro, the anti-Superman and villainous alter-ego.

The kooky creation was found on Superpunch, Say It Backwards and then some random message board.

WHERE IS HE?

Amid the current financial crisis, wacky election and overall uncertainy, where's The Great Communicator when we need him most? Do you wonder if he's rolling over in his grave?

JAMES BOND RIPOFFS AND FAKES

On this day of our 500th post (!!!), I give you this nifty lil' Bond entry.

With "Quantum of Solace," the much-anticipated follow-up to "Casino Royale," hitting theaters on November 14, here's an interesting and entertaining article that discusses how a plethora of spy movies have derived the majority of their style and premise from James Bond's iconic image.

FOREST WHITAKER TO STAR AS LOUIS ARMSTRONG

He's already starred as jazzman Charlie Parker and now Forest Whitaker will direct and star the Louis Armstrong biopic "What a Wonderful World" says Variety.

It will be the the first flick to be authorized by the Armstrong estate and is said to chronicle the musician's impoverished early years in New Orleans and primarily center on his career as a trumpet virtuoso and improvisational singer. We're stoked...

Scribe Ron Bass will write and executive produce the project alongside Oscar Cohen who is granting the filmmakers exclusive access to his personal accounts as Armstrong's road manager in the late '40s.

Shooting begins next summer in Louisiana.

VARIETY'S REVIEW FOR STONE'S 'W'

The first review is in for Oliver Stone's take on the George W. Bush presidency. Far from a rave, far from a pan...

Via Variety:

Oliver Stone's unusual and inescapably interesting "W." feels like a rough draft of a film it might behoove him to remake in 10 or 15 years. The director's third feature to hinge on a modern-era presidency, after "JFK" and "Nixon," offers a clear and plausible take on the current chief executive's psychological makeup and, considering Stone's reputation and Bush's vast unpopularity, a relatively even-handed, restrained treatment of recent politics. For a film that could have been either a scorching satire or an outright tragedy, "W." is, if anything, overly conventional, especially stylistically. The picture possesses dramatic and entertainment value, but beyond serious filmgoers curious about how Stone deals with all this president's men and women, it's questionable how wide a public will pony up to immerse itself in a story that still lacks an ending.

JON FAVREAU: 'SWINGERS 2 MIGHT HAPPEN'

These days, life is pretty stressful for me. That said, it's the little things that bring me joy. Case in point? In a recent L.A. Times chat, Jon Favreau said that a "Swingers 2" ain't out of the question and might happen eventually: “Maybe a Swingers sequel in another 10 years. Like the Sunshine Boys.”

Read more about it HERE.

In the meantime, enjoy the original theatrical trailer.

ALBA IN MUZZLE: SEXY or NOT SEXY?? DECLARE YIOURSELF AD

Jessica Alba, wearing only a Hannibal Lecter-type mask called “The Muzzler” and appearing to be crying, is starring in a second ad aimed at getting young people to vote.

"Only you can silence yourself," the ad says. "Make them hear you. Register to vote now."

The ad has the same language as Alba's previous ad for Declare Yourself, which showed the actress naked and covered in tape.

Declare Yourself is a national nonpartisan, nonprofit youth voter initiative aimed at energizing young adults to register and vote in the 2008 election.

HERE WE GO AGAIN: ACTORS TO STRIKE??

By RYAN NAKASHIMA, Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - The Screen Actors Guild's negotiating committee voted Wednesday to support a strike authorization vote, a tactic meant to break stalled contract talks with Hollywood studios.

The recommendation, approved 11-2, now goes to the guild's national board for review, and would ultimately need approval of 75 percent of the some 120,000 voting guild members.

"My personal opinion is, yes, we will achieve a strike authorization," said Anne Marie Johnson, a spokeswoman for Membership First, a faction of actors that had controlled SAG's national board until it narrowly lost its majority in elections last month.

"Membership First has always been a strong advocate of having a strike authorization with us while we're negotiating," Johnson said. "That's really a wise way to negotiate."

Contract talks dealing with prime-time TV shows and movies have been at a standstill since the previous contract expired June 30.

WHY? WHY?? WHY????!!!!

Being that "Smallville" is winding down, the CW is planning for the future. "Smallville" producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson are teaming with McG (what a director... NOT!) to produce a pilot for "The Graysons," based on pre-Batman days of Batman’s sidekick Robin. The show will follow Dick “DJ” Grayson, his family, first loves, and young rivals. The series will be set in modern times and will have a one-hour running time. Sounds God awful...

It may be interesting if the film will follow the Greysons as they perform in their traveling circus (that's why Robin was so acrobatic - he and his mom and dad were acrobats).

Does anyone care about Dick Grayson before he meets Brice Wayne?

And this via Variety: Proving yet again that no one in Tinseltown has anything new to offer, Michael De Luca, Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta will develop a remake of the 1987 Mickey Rourke supernatural thriller "Angel Heart." Why????? The film still holds up. The creepy locale of 'Nawlins and the bayou, the haunting score, Alan Parker's direction... De Niro!!, Rourke!! And the hotter than hell Lisa Bonet.

See for yourself...
