'TWILIGHT ZONE': THE AFTER HOURS & A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY

Ah, the genius that is Rod Serling... One of the most underrated writers EVER. He possessed a keen ability to tap into the fears of his day. Simple, fundamental, basic fears... It's genius.

Being that this is Halloween week, I still have a couple of videos to share with everyone. Here are two of my favorite "Twilight Zone" episodes. It's funny, the more they recreate these classic shows the more I feel like screaming, "STOPPP!!!"

"The Twilight Zone" worked in the '60s because of the paranoia of the day - be it cold war, nuke fears, the unknown of space travel or the simplicity of small town America gone awry, these shows had very common themes that don't translate when you toss in cell phones, color and small screen stars like Jessica Simpson, Jason Alexander or Katherine Heigl.

The first episode, "The After Hours," centers on a woman who discovers that the floor of a department store, on which she bought a gold thimble doesn't exist - and that her "saleslady" is really a mannequin.

The second episode, "A Stop at Willoughby," centers on an overworked advertising exec Gart Wiliams who cracks under the pressure of his job. But, in this classic episode, he dreams about a peaceful town named Willoughby.

Being that CBS is lame and hasn't jumped onto the embed bandwagon, you can watch these on a really high quality player via the links HERE and HERE.

THE ORIGINAL 'NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD' - HORROR PERFECTION

Being that this is Halloween week and all, I figured that I'd share one of my favorite horror flicks, "Night of the Living Dead." It's stark, creepy, black-and-white. Simple and effective, George A. Romero's classic stands the test of time. Watch and enjoy for yourself.

Here's the official plot synopsis: When unexpected radiation raises the dead, a microcosm of Average America has to battle flesh-eating zombies in George A. Romero's landmark cheapie horror film. Siblings Johnny (Russ Streiner) and Barbara (Judith O'Dea) whine and pout their way through a graveside visit in a small Pennsylvania town, but it all takes a turn for the worse when a zombie kills Johnny. Barbara flees to an isolated farmhouse where a group of people are already holed up. Bickering and panic ensue as the group tries to figure out how best to escape, while hoards of undead converge on the house; news reports reveal that fire wards them off, while a local sheriff-led posse discovers that if you "kill the brain, you kill the ghoul." After a night of immolation and parricide, one survivor is left in the house...

WHAT'S IT LIKE BEING BOND?

Hmmm, well let's let 007 Daniel Craig tell us. For those under a rock, the new James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" picks up from where "Casino Royale" left off and sees Daniel Craig in his second outing as 007. Sky's Anna Botting has been to meet the star.

R.I.P. THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR

What everyone has been predicting about the plight of American newspapers is starting to come to fruition. The Christian Science Monitor will eventually become a weekly. The newspaper, which will cease daily publication next April and emphasize the Web, becomes the most prominent paper to scale back print.

Sad...

'BOONDOCK SAINTS II: ALL SAINTS DAY': DOES ANYONE CARE?

After the long, long decade of rumors, combined with many refusals to believe it was true, as well semi-coverage of this project all year (on the interwebs), the massively desired (by many) sequel "Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day" has officially begun filming in Toronto.

Director Troy Duffy's infamy was documented in "Overnight," a volatile documentary which he initially authorized and endorsed. If you haven't watched it, it's amazing to see someone who seems so full of himself, only to realize he isn't exactly the flavor of the month he might have thought he was.

I dunno ... Has this ship sailed?

IT'S CHILLER TIME: RECAP OF CHILLER THEATER OCT. 24-26

It's Chiller Theater Time once again... Be it stamps, photography, computers, blogging or whatever. There's a geek in us all. That said, this weekend was the latest meeting of the Chiller Theatre. For those who aren't privy, Chiller Theater is a stupendous meeting of everything B-list, schlocky, gory, funny, sci-fi and horrific. Hipsters, motorheads, goths, geeks and nerds unite for this three day convention of peddlers offering their wares and more importantly, the C- to Z- listers who attend to sign autographs and meet their fans.

But let's be real, all of the bootlegs, one-sheets, tee-shirts and memorabilia can be found on eBay. Chiller is about about the celebs attending because that's really the only reason why anyone really goes. Well, that, and all of the scantily clad chicks walking around with barely nothing on with a dog chain around their neck...

That's Chiller...

Here are some thoughts on the roughly 50 celebs in attendance:

NOTE: THESE PICS ARE NOT FROM THE SHOW...

THE SWEATHOGS of "Welcome Back Kotter"

Ron Palillo - Horseshack from "Welcome Back Kotter" looked like, well, horseshit. Every time I looked at him, he looked like he had a sad sort of mope on his face. Maybe it was the smackdown that Screech gave him in Fox's "Celebrity Boxing" in 2002. Palillo, who was introduced as "The Pulverizer," attempted to stare Diamond down, and even shoved him after the fighters had been given their pre-fight instructions. Once the bell rang, however, Diamond was in complete control. Palillo was knocked down twice in round two, and the fight was stopped at the time 1:23 in the same round. Palillo finished the bout with a pair of black eyes.

Robert Hedges - Played Juan Julio de Huevos Epstein, who was part Puerto Rican, part Jewish. He was often late for class and had his trusty note for teacher Mr. Kotter. At first glance, he reminded me of Slash's dumpy older cousin. Wow, that's Juan Epstein. Age is a bitch.

Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs - Best known for the smoothe "Hi there ..." and "Mr. Kottt...er" taglines, the actor who played Freddie 'Boom Boom' Washington was the best preserved of the Sweathogs. Truth be told, none of the trio looked all that excited to be there.

Billy Redden - Who??? You know 'em. One word. Inbred. Okay, two. Banjo kid. Okay, one more. "Deliverance." Ahhh, yes... The freaky banjo kid from one of the freakiest hillbilly horror flicks of all time. Redden now, God only knows how old he is, doesn't look a lick like he did and resembles some old Kentucky cotton poacher. he did, however, have a banjo with him. I wonder if anyone asked him to play it.

Ralph Macchio - Quite possibly the one celeb I was most stoked to meet and I can say with all honesty that I've never met a more underwhelming personality in my life. OK, so I shook his hand twice, he didn't seem thrilled to meet any fans and all I can hypothesize is that he had to be embarrassed by the whole shindig. Like this was the last stop for him on the road to oblivion. "C'mon," I felt like saying, "You're Daniel fucking La Russo!!"

... Not to mention lost puppy Johnny Cade from "The Outsiders."
"DO IT FOR JOHNNY, MAN!! DO IT FOR JOHNNY!!"

So, buck up Ralph, you're a headliner... Next time, act like one. Be it. Feel it.

John Schneider - Like my buddy Joe proudly proclaimed, "I think I have a man crush on John Schneider." I dunno what they serve in the water out in La La Land - be it vitamins or human growth hormone - but the former Bo Duke of "The Dukes of Hazzard" looks not a day over 35. Seriously, he must have sold his soul to the devil. Life's been good to him and it shows.

What's more, he had a more-than-savvy autograph show presentation. His booth was stocked to the gills with goodies like DVD sets of "Smallville" (where he stars as Jonathan Kent), General Lee hats, 'Duke' T-shirts. PLUS ... he was the only Chiller guest celeb that I ever saw that had a MasterCard/Visa placard displayed on their table. He raked it in.

Barry Williams - Not sure how I felt about Greg Brady. I dunno, too many of these guys approach these shows as a business which is fine, but I don't want to KNOW THAT while I'm talking to them. I grew up watching many of these people and as an only child, they really did keep me company after school for hours at a time, To that end, it seems kinda wrong that Greggors is hawking his wrinkly, old "Brady Bunch" scripts and had tiki replicas available for signing. It screams a tad of desperation and a tad of "I don't care if I hold on to my life's keepsakes." It sort of cheapens the entire aura of a classic sitcom and what it means to the general audience who loved it. Suggestion to all celebs: Maybe keep it to 8 x 10s, a book you wrote and perhaps DVD sets (if you MUST peddle something of high value). The second certain stars start prepping custom guitar picks, G-Strings, baby doll shirts or whatever, it just seems that the fans are starting to get taken advantage of. And that's just wrong.

Erik Estrada - I'm bummed cuz I usually go for only one autograph per Chiller Show and Estrada would have been my second (behind Macchio). Growing up, "CHiPs' was the shit and Ponch was right up there behind The Fonz. While I didn't get to talk to Estrada, he was flashing those pearly whites, looked genuinely happy to be there and I suspect, did very well at the show. Perhaps next time...

Corey Haim - OK, I'm gonna admit that I watched "The Two Coreys" over the last summer, and while I thought that Haim looked like a would-be junkie, he looked more so in person. What's more, I was amazed that he appeared to be even more gaunt than he appeared on TV and much much smaller. He seemed to be having a genuinely busy time and seemed like a nice-as-heck dude. Just saying' ... The coffee swigging, twittery nature, sunglasses and string bean appearance concerned me.

SNL: PICK UP CHICKS LIKE DON DRAPER & TWO A-HOLES AT AN AD AGENCY

Don Draper is a guy's guy and no doubt Papa H. would love him to Holy Hell. Kudos to Jon Hamm and his hilarious spoofing of his "Mad Men" alter ego Don Draper on Saturday's "SNL".

DANIEL CRAIG INTERVIEW

OK, this latest James Bond is one of the world's hottest stars, but Daniel Craig says donning the 007 mantel hasn't been a bed of roses.

BARACK AND HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE: A CHILLING INTERVIEW

Please... Grab a cup of java and listen to Mike Savage interview Democrat attorney Philip J. Berg, former deputy attorney general of Pennsylvania, about his lawsuit demanding Barack Obama present his original birth certificate to prove he was born in the United States and qualified to serve as president. On my drive home I was astounded. Take a few minutes and listen because Berg has possible evidence that Obama may be constitutionally inelligible to be elected President of the United States.

RICHIE AND OPIE TALK POLITICS

While I may not agree with the politics, I do chuckle at this pretty funny Ron Howard political video where he reprises his roles of Opie Taylor and Richie Cunningham. -- WHAT'S MORE, we even see Henry Winkler reprising his role as The Fonz and Andy Griffith as Andy Taylor. Fun, but like I said, I don't agree with the message. At least it was done in a semi-earnest manner.

JUST WHAT THE HELL DOES ALCOHOL 'PROOF' MEAN??

Papa H loved him some swill every now and then. Funny enough, my main man Porl Gordon tells us all about alcohol "proof," the term, and how it may have originated. All I have to say is, "Yo, Ho, Ho..."

I suspect, however, (and I could be wrong) that this vid may have been a hilarious result after some innocent imbibing at the local tavern... Nonetheless it's one of the more entertaining vids I've seen in a while.

I LOVE DENNY CRANE ... (THANK GOD FOR GUNS VIDEO)

... So would Papa H. That's for sure. Here's why:

VINTAGE EASTWOOD: GRAN TORINO (LOOKS AWESOME)

The studio known as WB has rolled out the marketing for Clint Eastwood’s new seventies-esque action yarn "Gran Torino." It centers on a disgruntled racist Korean War vet named Walt Kowalski (Eastwood), who sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong immigrant teenage neighbor (newcomer Bee Vang), who, as part of a gang initiation, tries to steal Kowalski’s prized possession -- his 1972 Gran Torino.

In typical kickass Eastwood style, Walt ends up confronting prejudices that have isolated him. The actor says this will “probably” be his last film as an actor. More at USA Today.

POW FOOTAGE OF McCAIN

As part of a French documentary taken from his time as a POW in North Vietnam, John McCain talks about being shot down and almost dying in hospital. The footage, from the 1960s, is courtesy of the French National Archive and has an English translation.

DR. STRANGE WILL BE A MOVIE, SAYS MARVEL

This one almost seems like a no-brainer considering people seem to go apeshit for mystical fare these days. The Master of the Mystic Arts and the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe, Dr. Strange will be the next big budget film hero.

The character Marvel editor Joe Quesada called “problematic,” and comic writers Neil Gaiman and Stan Lee called the one character they’d most like to see next in film, is very much at the top of the list for a post “Avengers” make-over, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige told MTV News.

We're there...

'QUANTUM OF SOLACE' REVIEWS - EARLY BUZZ NOT ALL THAT POSITIVE

Hmmm, we're sorta bummed about this. It seems that many of the London papers and tabs are exactly thrilled by the new James Bond flick. And while most of them agree that Daniel Craig is pretty damn awesome as 007, the film doesn't hit the mark in the manner that "Casino Royale" did.

Times Online: “It’s James Bond, licence to bore. Quantum of Solace may be a sequel to Casino Royale but it lacks that movie’s panache and brio.” … “Bond is a boorish oaf who simply rushes from country to country with the manic speed of Jason Bourne, including sequences shot in Panama, Chile, Italy, Mexico and Austria, in a plot about holding a country to ransom over its water supply. Quantum of Solace lacks any wit, ironic or otherwise, which has been a strength of so many 007 films.” … “At around one hour 40 minutes, this Bond is shorter than most. Somehow it felt longer.”

The Guardian: “This didn’t excite me as much as Casino Royale and the villain is especially underpowered.” … “This is a crash-bang Bond, high on action, low on quips, long on location glamour, short on product placement.” … “I was disappointed there was so little dialogue, flirtation and characterization in this Bond: Forster and his writers Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade clearly thought this sort of sissy nonsense has to be cut out in favor of explosions. Well, perhaps that is what Bond fans want (not this Bond fan, though). But I was also baffled that relatively little was made of the deliciously villainous Amalric”.

The Telegraph: “…owes much to the quick-fire editing of the Bourne thrillers.” … “In this much darker film” … ” For half an hour or so after the pre-credits ‘teaser’, the film barely lets up.” … “And then, the pacing becomes more fractured. One wonders if director Marc Forster and screenwriters Paul Haggis and Neal Purvis haven’t tried a little too hard to distance the film from traditional Bond plots. The expository dialogue scenes can be dull, and cram in so many machinations and double-crossings that it’s easy to lose track of who’s duping whom. And yet, several times - just when you’re tempted to consult your watch - the movie suddenly surprises.”

The Daily Mirror: “Quantum of Solace is a leaner, meaner animal, rammed with shoot-outs, a boat chase and even an aerial dogfight. And our hero is an angry, embittered man out for blood. Mostly it doesn’t feel like a Bond film at all. Not once does Craig say: “The name’s Bond. James Bond.” There’s no Q or his gadgets. Heck, we even see Bond in a cardigan. There are no risque quips or arched eyebrows.” … “It doesn’t disappoint - just don’t expect the brilliance of Casino Royale.”
