RONALD REAGAN KNEW...

... Even back then. Check out this gem from the 1961 Operation Coffee Cup Campaign against Socialized Medicine as proposed by the Democrats. Then a private citizen, Ronald Reagan spoke out against socialized medicine. There is no video because this was an LP sent out by the American Medical Association.

But Reagan was wrong. He was speaking out against the adoption of Medicare, which has turned out to be both successful and extremely popular. As Steve Benen of The Washington Monthly observed a while back, "Reagan warned that if Medicare became law, there was a real possibility that the federal government would control where Americans go and what they do for a living." Gee, that didn't happen, did it? Whaddya know?

Reagan was wrong then, and his Republican't successors are just as wrong now in employing whatever lies they can come up with to kill President Obama's health-care reform proposals. It's about time that GOPers learn that you can't always be against change and progress; sometimes you have to step up and actually try to help the American public.

Cheers,
Jeff

There's more information about Reagan's demonstrably false warnings against Medicare here:
