ARMY ARCHERD DEAD AT 87, RIP

Veteran entertainment journalist Army Archerd, who wrote a column for the entertainment trade publication Variety for over 50 years, has died. He was 87.

Archerd's spokeswoman said he died Tuesday at UCLA Medical Center of mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs strongly tied to asbestos exposure.

Archerd began his career at The Associated Press and later went on to write about the Hollywood at Variety. His most significant scoop came in 1985 when Archerd reported that Rock Hudson was undergoing treatment for AIDS, despite denials by Hudson's spokesman.

He was one of the first journalist to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

BAD NEWS FOR JAZZ: CAN IT BE SAVED?

In 2002, the year of the last survey, 10.8% of adult Americans attended at least one jazz performance. In 2008, that figure fell to 7.8%.

Not only is the audience for jazz shrinking, but it’s growing older—fast. The median age of adults in America who attended a live jazz performance in 2008 was 46. In 1982 it was 29.

First I must apologize for not posting on a more frequent basis. It's abhorrent. An embarrassment. A crime against all humanity .. err, you get the picture.

But I just found out a piece of nifty lil news thanks to Slashfilm and Bloodydisgusting.

Fresh off the heels of the new mania of everyting vampires comes this lil piece of joy... Universal is looking to reboot the cinematic incarnation of Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles."

As most fans know, the first book in the series was "Interview with the Vampire" and the film incarnation starred Tom Cruise as an androgynous Lestat as well as Brad Pitt. The next pic in the series, "Queen of the Damned" starred Stuart Townsend as Lestat. Yawn.

But here's the great news: Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to take the lead role of Lestat. Looks like Downey is cleaning up franchise-wise. And good for him. Not only do we get to see him as Tony Stark in the Iron Man franchise, but we also get to see him as Sherlock Holmes later this year.

On July 10th of this year, Anne Rice published the following statement on her official site:

We will see high quality films based on the adventures of Lestat and his friends in the future. We will see a fine film some day of Ramses the Damned. The Mayfair Witches will have new life in film. The Christ the Lord books will some day make it to the screen. Angel Time, and the future adventures of Toby O’Dare, will make it to television or film. When I have solid news of a new film based on any of my works, I will post it on this website.

I sit here numb on a Friday night, late, staring at TV images of a legend gone forever. This generation's last mania-inducing legend.

Mad genius and oddball eccentric he was part Howard Hughes, part Elvis, part Mickey Mouse and that's what made him, him.

Scandals aside, my adolescence and to a large degree, even my early adulthood was consumed by his essence.

I wasn't alone. There wasn't a tucked away corner of the world where people didn't know him.

Need proof? He broke the internet when he died. Imagine that.

He's suddenly and unexpectedly gone now and I, like, the rest of the world will miss him dearly.

Many people discuss 2012 as the end of the world due to interpretations of predictions contained in the Mayan calendar. The Mayan civilization was extremely advanced in mathematics, engineering and astronomy and also had an incredible understanding of time and space.

Various calendars were in use to track time in linear progressions within cycles. The “Great Cycle” of the “Long Count” calendar equates to 5,125.36 years. The current Great Cycle is due to be completed on the winter solstice of 2012, December 21. So, it has been interpreted that on this day, the Great Cycle ends, time ends, so the Earth must end as well. However, there are different opinions on what this end date really means.

As mentioned, some believe cataclysmic events will take place in 2012 with the ultimate destruction occurring on December 21, 2012. Others believe that the world will not end, but instead humanity will enter a new age, marked by significant changes physically and mentally.

Hopefully destruction will not occur and it will be just another day. Maybe there will be some cosmic transformation. Anything is possible and it makes for an interesting discussion none-the-less.

Nonetheless, this new trailer for "2012" looks not only amazing but downright creepy...

Woo-hoo! The long anticipated trailer for Martin Scorsese's film adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel "Shutter Island" has finally hit the interbwebs.

Seems like a small departure for Scorsese - his first creepfest since "Cape Fear," the film centers on a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio in his fourth Marty picture) who travels to Shutter Island, a small island in Massachusetts’ Outer Harbor, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to find an escaped murderous patient in the Summer of 1954.

Here's the official plot:

“But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. And neither is Teddy Daniels. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe’s radical approach to psychiatry? The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive them insane...”

Overture Films and Paramount Vantage have announced that Oscar-winner Michael Moore’s new documentary feature will be released domestically on October 2, 2009. The as-yet-untitled film will explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore has described as “the biggest robbery in the history of this country” – the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.

On this, the 20-year anniversary of his masterpiece Roger & Me, Moore returns to the issue that began his career: the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of Americans and citizens of the world. But this time the culprit is much bigger than General Motors, and the crime scene far wider than Flint, Michigan.

Says Moore: "The wealthy, at some point, decided they didn't have enough wealth. They wanted more -- a lot more. So they systematically set about to fleece the American people out of their hard-earned money. Now, why would they do this? That is what I seek to discover in this movie."

Moore’s new documentary, his first since 2007’s widely-praised Sicko, was first announced by Overture and Paramount Vantage International in May 2008 at the Cannes Film Festival and production began shortly afterward.

Chris McGurk and Danny Rosett, Overture’s CEO and COO respectively, previously worked with Moore when they oversaw the release of Bowling for Columbine at MGM/United Artists.

“Everyone can relate to this subject matter and all have been affected,” said McGurk and Rosett. “We think there should be plenty of people interested in hearing Michael’s take on how exactly we got here and what we can do to move forward.”

"Inglourious Basterds" is a violent fairy tale, an increasingly entertaining fantasia in which the history of World War II is wildly reimagined so that the cinema can play the decisive role in destroying the Third Reich. Quentin Tarantino's long-gestating war saga invests a long-simmering revenge plot with reworkings of innumerable genre conventions, but only fully finds its tonal footing about halfway through, after which it's off to the races. By turns surprising, nutty, windy, audacious and a bit caught up in its own cleverness, the picture is a completely distinctive piece of American pop art with a strong Euro flavor that's new for the director. Several explosive scenes and the names of Tarantino and topliner Brad Pitt promise brawny commercial prospects, especially internationally, as the preponderance of subtitled dialogue might put off a certain slice of the prospective domestic audience.

'SHERLOCK HOLMES' TRAILER ARRIVES

The Brothers Warner have just dumped the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s "Sherlock Holmes" on the world and we must say, it seems more Disney Pirates-esque than we may have thought. It stars Robert Downey Jr. as the title character of the Arthur Conan Doyle books and short stories. Jude Law co-stars as Dr. John Watson, Rachel McAdams plays Holmes’ love-interest, “the deceptive” Irene Adler. And Mark Strong plays the film’s villain Lord Blackwood, an industrialist who “holds sway over a cult of dark-arts practitioners and claims to possess supernatural powers, is linked to a series of murders.”

The film’s action-comedy tone aside it certainly does seem to also include Ritchie’s signature style as well.

Here's the official plot: In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, “Sherlock Holmes” sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

Sherlock Holmes will hit theaters on December 25th 2009.

Proving yet again that Hollywood has all the creativity of a brain dead knat, Variety reports that StudioCanal and Original Films are planning a remake of the Sylvester Stallone-led 1993 mountain climbing action thriller "Cliffhanger."

We ask again? WHY???

In the Renny Harlin-directed original, Stallone played a park ranger who is forced help a group of terrorits recover three suitcases containing $100 million lost in the Rocky Mountains.

A huge hit for Sly, it grossed $255 million worldwide and scored generally positive reviews for its impressive action including a mid-air hijack sequence and the famous opening suspense set piece involving a woman whose equipment fails during a perilous climb across a deep chasm.

According to the trade, the new version will center on a group of young climbers and will "feature multiple cliff-face locations". A screenwriter is being sought with production aiming to kick off next year.

Neal Moritz, who is also producing the upcoming "Escape from New York" remake for Warners, will produce.

JERRY LEWIS RETURNS TO THE BIG SCREEN

Variety reports that comedy legend Jerry Lewis will take the top billing in his first film since Martin Scorsese's "King of Comedy."

It's based on Daniel Noah’s screenplay "Max Rose" and centers on a widower who “revisits key moments” of his life in order to understand them better so there’s every chance a younger actor as a younger Max Rose will do the heaviest lifting.

Dimension Films has released it's movie trailer for John Hillcoat’s feature film adaption of Cormac McCarthy’s novel "The Road."

It centers on a man (Viggo Mortensen) and his young son (Kodi Smit McPhee.) traveling through a desperate, post-apocalyptic world. The flap jacket on the book describes the setting as “burned America.”The film co-stars Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron, and Guy Pearce.

'NINE' TRAILER RELEASED (LOOKS AMAZING)

I smell the start of the Oscar race...

The Brothers Weinstein Co just released their first movie trailer for "Nine." "Chicago" director Rob Marshall last time out, won six Oscars including Best Picture, and returns to adapt another classic production of the Great White Way.

It centers on a world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), a producer, a mistress (Penelope Cruz), a film star muse (Nicole Kidman), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), and his deceased mother (Sophia Loren).

The original 1982 Broadway production was nominated for twelve Tony Awards and winning five, including Best Musical. In 2003, the Broadway revival of “NINE,” starring Antonio Banderas, received eight Tony Award nominations and won two, including Best Revival of a Musical.

From the look and feel of the production, it's easy to tell that it's inspired by Fellini’s personal, painful, and beautiful film "8 1/2."

"Nine" hits theaters on November 25th 2009.

MARTIN SCORSESE TO DIRECT 'SINATRA'

We just peed ourselves. While Marty has long been rumored to directed a Rat Pack film, the interwebs report that the famed director has signed with Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures to direct a biopic based on the life of Frank Sinatra.

Scribe Phil Alden Robinson will write the screenplay, titled simply "Sinatra." Although, we're not sure what his source material will be. Robinson is probably best known as the writer/director of Sneakers and Field of Dreams, which he was nominated for an Academy Award.
The music rights have been secured and the Sinatra clan (who can be very guarded about their famous pop) has given its permission. Frank’s youngest daughter Tina Sinatra will be an executive producer. Many won't remember the TV miniseries she produced that was, in my opinion, the BEST representation of Frank onscreen and truth be told, didn't pull punches.

Peter Guber has been trying to get this project into production for years and ity's very possible that Scorsese might actually push to make the film as his next project.

The WB has released a brand, spankin-new video clip from "Terminator Salvation" on promotional partner Pizza Hut’s website.

The five-minute clip features a scene where Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) and Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) encounter the huge robotic terminator called The Harvester. After the sequence, they have a featurette that shows you how they created the sequence.

Ok, so Quentin Tarantino is just about to debut "Inglourious Basterds" at the Cannes Film Festival, and he is already planning another film in his potential WW II franchise.

The scoop is that Tarantino had put on the backburner a significant subplot involving African-American soldiers stuck behind enemy lines, which he hopes to make that part of a prequel.

"I have a half-written prequel ready to go if this movie’s a smash,” Tarantino tells the New York Times .

Of course, the famous director has a history of talking about projects and ideas that never come to fruition. You might recall a little Pulp Fiction / Reservoir Dogs prequel/sequel called The Vega Brothers??? And the potential sequels to Kill Bill??

A first? The trailer for "Gamer" had its recent debut on X Box Live. Lionsgate has premiered the official U.S. trailer. It comes to us from Crank madmen, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.

Here's the official plot - a bit Tron-esque but cool nonetheless: "Gamer" is a high-concept action thriller set in the near future, a time when mind-control technology has taken society by storm. Humans control other humans in a mass-scale, multiplayer online game. Reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) has created the controversial form of entertainment, “Slayers,” a hugely popular game that allows millions to act out their innermost fantasies and desires - online - in front of a global audience. Huge considering the Vatican made such a stink the first time out.

Reviewers at the Vatican's newspaper have passed judgment on "Angels & Demons," finding the new Ron Howard religious thriller commercial and inaccurate, but concluding that it's just plum "harmless" entertainment. And no, it's not a danger to the church.

Like DUH...

L'Osservatore Romano ran a review and an editorial in its Wednesday's edition, critiquing the movie based on the Dan Brown best-selling novel of the same name.

The highly-anticipated flick "Angels & Demons" had its world premiere in Rome on Monday.
Funny enough, the paper suggested moviegoers could make a game out of finding the many historical inaccuracies in the plot.

"Angels & Demons" features Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon of "The Da Vinci Code" fame, played by Tom Hanks. In the film, the Vatican turns to Langdon after an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati kidnap four cardinals considered front-runners to be the next pope, and threaten to kill one an hour and then explode a bomb at the Vatican.

As for the first time around, church brass objected to "The Da Vinci Code" because it was based on the idea that Jesus married and fathered children and depicted the conservative Catholic movement, Opus Dei, as a murderous cult.

The Brothers Weinstein have posted the third character poster for Quentin Tarantino’s "Inglourious Basterds," featuring Diane Kruger.

In the flick, she plays Bridget von Hammersmark, a popular film star in Nazi Germany and a spy for the allies.

The year is 2018.

Judgment Day has come and gone, leveling modern civilization. An army of Terminators roams the post-apocalyptic landscape, killing or collecting humans where they hide in the desolate cities and deserts. But small groups of survivors have organized into a Resistance, hiding in underground bunkers and striking when they can against an enemy force that vastly outnumbers them.

Controlling the Terminators is the artificial intelligence network Skynet, which became self-aware 14 years earlier and, in the blink of an eye, turned on its creators, unleashing nuclear annihilation on an unsuspecting world.

Only one man saw Judgment Day coming. One man, whose destiny has always been intertwined with the fate of human existence: John Connor (Christian Bale).

Now the world is on the brink of the future that Connor has been warned about all his life. But something totally new has shaken his belief that humanity stands a chance of winning this war: the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger from the past whose last memory is of being on death row before awakening in this strange, new world.

Connor must decide whether Marcus can be trusted. But as Skynet adapts new strategies to end the Resistance forever, Connor and Marcus must find common ground to take a stand against the onslaught—to infiltrate Skynet and meet the enemy head-on.

And here is a bit of the character rundown from the plot synopsis:

“NO FATE BUT WHAT WE MAKE”: THE END BEGINS

The human drama at the heart of “Terminator Salvation” unfolds against a bomb-blasted post-apocalyptic America in the aftermath of Judgment Day.

“We’re telling the story of the world after Judgment Day,” says McG. “This is the story of the becoming of John Connor, the becoming of Kyle Reese, the strengthening of Skynet, and where our humanity ultimately lies. This is the moment when mankind takes a stand against the machines.”

In bringing the long-promised “Terminator” future to life, McG wanted to create a vision that was no less real. “I didn’t want to shoot actors against green screens; I wanted them reacting to physical Terminators,” the director says. “I wanted the desolate American West—an expanse that suggests a world of hardship, so you could taste it and feel it. Because the bombs have gone off and damaged the ozone, the sky’s a bit of a different color. Earth has a different quality, and you immediately realize something is wrong.”

Director Jonathan Mostow closed the first trilogy in 2003 with “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” in which the terrible event Connor (Nick Stahl) and his mother spent their lives trying to prevent—Judgment Day—rains nuclear war across the world at Skynet’s command. “Terminator 3” was co-written by John Brancato & Michael Ferris, who returned to the franchise to write the screenplay for “Terminator Salvation.” Brancato offers, “Since we ended the original ‘Terminator’ trilogy by destroying the world, we knew we couldn’t go back to the well of time-traveling Terminators. The new film had to be about what happens after the bombs fell.”

Ferris adds, “We wanted to write about the long-predicted battle between men and machines, which also gave us an opportunity to change the overall tone of the franchise. The earlier movies unfolded in a familiar, contemporary world; this film is a war movie, set in a darker, post-apocalyptic future.”

“Terminator Salvation” takes place in 2018, 14 years after the nuclear attack that ended the previous “Terminator” trilogy. Producer Moritz Borman, who also served as an executive producer on “Terminator 3,” remarks, “From the start, we made a conscious decision that just as the previous films had been set in the timeframe we know today, ‘Terminator Salvation’ would begin to reveal the future that had only been glimpsed in the earlier movies. So we’re jumping to the time when Kyle Reese is still a teenager and they have not yet discovered what we know comes next, mainly the time travel that set the story in motion. In this film, we are finally in the midst of the war that was forewarned, and we can watch Connor’s rise to become the head of the resistance.” evious “Terminator” trilogy. In “Terminator Salvation,” Bale says, “Skynet is dominant but still in a state of evolution. Humans are definitely on the out. Their backs are against the wall and their circumstances are desperate. This is the last, final effort for the survival of mankind.”

“Everything is difficult for humans now,” McG attests. “It’s difficult to get food, difficult to get energy. Everything is depleted. And you’re always being hunted.”

Nevertheless, Borman states, “There has to be hope for humanity. There has to be something in the way that they live that shows they believe there will be a future after the machines, that the world might rise again out of the ashes. And their hope is, of course, pinned to John Connor.”

Connor fights on the front lines of the Resistance, but is not yet its leader. New developments by Skynet have rocked his vision of the future, as told to him throughout his life by his mother. She believed the future was not set, and his own doubts are growing that he may not live to initiate the events that will result in his own conception, namely, sending Kyle Reese back in time to protect his mother.

“John Connor doesn’t know whether he can become the John Connor that his mother talked about,” notes producer Jeffrey Silver, “because he knows there are many possible futures. This is a character with incredible complexity and courage, and Christian was able to deliver the kind of multi-layered portrayal that such an important role demanded.”

The man John Connor has become is at once an extension of his younger persona and someone entirely new. Bale affirms, “He’s definitely a guy with a lot of issues, somebody who has been told the future all his life and bears the burden of that knowledge. But his mother also told him there is no fate but what you make, so knowing that, he can’t just go hide and think everything’s going to be fine. He’s got to be out there fighting. And he is a fighter. I saw him very much like an Achilles-type character. He’s somebody who loves the fray. But he’s battling with what soldiers deal with every day—the loss of very good friends—and his fears that he is not the leader that people are probably expecting at that point.”

In addition to his clashes with the Resistance leaders and fears about Skynet’s strength and innovation, a new element shatters the vision of the future Connor grew up believing in: the emergence of a man whose existence has never been mentioned—a human-machine hybrid named Marcus Wright. John Brancato asserts, “The key to the story was coming up with the character of Marcus Wright, whose internal battle reflects the larger conflict.”

Marcus Wright’s last memory was of being put to death for committing a crime; he has no knowledge of how he came into this world or what his purpose is here. “Marcus had been on death row,” says Sam Worthington. “He was put to death. But then he wakes up in this post-apocalyptic world and has to go on a surreal adventure to figure out why he isn’t dead.”

“Nobody really knows who Marcus is to start with,” says Bale. “He’s somebody with a past, with an awful lot of regrets. There’s a theme throughout the film of desiring a second chance.”

The notion of second chances is what had driven Dr. Serena Kogen to find Marcus on death row. A scientist with the genetics division of Cyberdyne Systems, Serena is played by Helena Bonham Carter. “Helena plays a very proficient scientist who is working on the cutting edge of technology,” says McG. “She’s further motivated by the fact that she has terminal cancer. She truly believes her research could give people like her a second chance, but her research falls into the hands of Skynet, and the consequences of that are quite revolutionary for the machines. But she is indeed the one who enlists Marcus to donate his body for what she will only tell him is ‘research,’ and hers is the last human face he sees before dying.”

Adrift in this strange, new world, wearing stolen clothes and struggling to come to grips with what happened to him after “death,” Marcus is saved from a Terminator aggressor by a young man, played by Anton Yelchin, who identifies himself as Kyle Reese. “Marcus ends up in an abandoned building where this T-600 starts firing at him,” Yelchin describes. “And out of nowhere, a kid runs in, grabs him and saves him. And that kid is Kyle Reese. We hear him say, as he did in the first film, ‘Come with me if you want to live.’”

Kyle, who will eventually travel backwards through time to save Sarah Connor, is at this point still a teenager, struggling to survive himself. “He’s scrappy; he’s a gritty survivor,” says McG. “I needed those qualities to be evident in a younger version of Michael Biehn, who played the adult Kyle in ‘The Terminator,’ because our story takes place some ten-odd years before he’s sent back in time.”

While Kyle listens to the shortwave radio broadcasts delivered by John Connor, dreaming of joining him in the Resistance, Connor is himself searching for Kyle. “Connor is looking for Kyle Reese, who is his father, but is at this point still just a teenage boy,” says Bale. “Kyle has no idea of the important role that he will play in the future, and Connor can’t tell him. Time travel can really mess you up,” he smiles.

But Kyle is not alone in his journey. He’s accompanied by Star, a nine-year-old girl rendered mute by the trauma of war and displacement. Played by Jadagrace Berry, Star has the uncanny ability to sense the presence of a Terminator before it appears, but, more importantly, her presence gives Kyle a greater sense of purpose. “She’s the biggest point of vulnerability for Kyle because he sees Star as his main responsibility,” says Yelchin. “I think if she wasn’t there, he wouldn’t try as hard, regardless of the Resistance.”

“Star sort of embodies innocence in the picture,” says McG. “She embodies hope. You take one look at her face and you say, ‘That’s what we’re fighting for. We want to keep people like this alive. This is the future.’ Unlike those who remember the world before, she has grown up in a world that’s ruled by the brutality of the machines. It’s given her the ability to sense them coming, so she’s able to offer a critical assist every now and again.”

Surviving from day to day, Kyle, Star and now Marcus are alternately threatened and helped by other human refugees they meet along the way, including Virginia, played by Jane Alexander. When the rest of her group wants to turn the trio away, Virginia insists upon sharing what little resources they have. Worthington observes, “The irony, of course, is that it’s only here, where living itself is a challenge, that Marcus experiences true human kindness and compassion.”

Marcus, Kyle and Star are suddenly separated when they’re ambushed by a Harvester—a giant insect-like machine with multiple arms and legs that seeks out its prey and loads them into a Transporter to take back to Skynet. Pursued by an army of Terminators—from the massive Hunter-Killers to the sleek, two-wheeled Moto-Terminators—across miles of open roads, bridges and rivers, Kyle and Star are ultimately captured by the Harvester and deposited in a Transporter, their fate unknown.

“That is part of the heartbreak of the machine world,” comments McG. “You do the best you could ever do as a human being, and it’s still not enough. You just can’t knock these machines down. With everything that Kyle and Marcus throw at them, it’s just not enough. They can’t be stopped.”

Having eluded capture himself, Marcus saves the life of a downed A-10 jet pilot who is forced to eject after failing to rescue the humans from the Harvester. The pilot turns out to be the stunning Blair Williams, who takes Marcus back with her to the Resistance base. “Blair is a wonderful fighter pilot and a survivalist,” says McG. “She really knows how to maneuver, destroy machines and, most importantly, stay alive. She has her life saved by Marcus, so she feels indebted to him.”

On their way to the Resistance base, Marcus is injured by a landmine. Rushed into the Rebellion’s outpost, he is immediately treated by John’s wife, Kate Connor, played by Bryce Dallas Howard. “In the intervening years since Judgment Day, Kate has become a physician, training the best she can in these circumstances,” Howard relates. “She finds books and she’s talked to as many survivors as possible, learning different techniques to enable her to save lives.”

Kate is also Connor’s partner in the ongoing fight. “John is a soldier and Kate is a doctor, and to that effect they’re a very tightly bonded, formidable team,” says McG. “They both have strong intelligence and the will to lead. It was critical to find a Kate Connor that would be worthy of leading the resistance, and I thought Bryce had the elegance and the intelligence to make people believe that she could indeed call the shots if anything ever happened to John Connor. Kate and Blair both are in keeping with the tradition of powerful female characters in the ‘Terminator’ films.”

Kate is the first to see that Marcus’s body has been modified into a new, previously unknown model of Terminator: a hybrid with a human heart, brain, and exterior, but the interior workings of a robot.

Completely unaware of his transformation, Marcus is overwhelmed by the realization that his state execution was only a prelude to a new state of being. “Marcus has metal arms and legs but he still has a human heart and brain, and therein lies the rub,” says Worthington. “Is that enough to protect his humanity? He believes he’s human, but everyone around him other than Blair thinks he’s the enemy, including possibly Skynet. But I think this film explores the power of human choice and free will through this character. Even though he is augmented with machinery, his human heart is real.”

“As soon as they discover he’s a hybrid, there is no trust,” says Moon Bloodgood.

“But Blair sees Marcus’s courage and his struggle. She saw a part of him that they never got a chance to see. He saved her life; he opened up to her. And Blair’s not afraid to go up against John Connor because her values are more important to her than he is, or even beating Skynet.”

Serving as Connor’s eyes and ears, his second-in-command, Barnes, is assigned to watch over Marcus until he can be studied. Barnes is played by actor and musical artist Common.

“Barnes is this spiritual warrior in many ways, fighting to the end by Connor’s side for the future of humanity, and he sees Marcus as a threat,” says Common. “But, by the same token, he’s been through a lot of things that force him to come to a spiritual understanding—about their struggle, about John Connor’s destiny—and much of it is tied into Marcus.”

As the situation on the ground changes, Connor believes his own strategies must also dramatically change, which sets him at odds with the recognized leader of the Resistance, General Ashdown, played by sci-fi veteran actor Michael Ironside. “Michael Ironside, who I worked with before on ‘The Machinist,’ plays the leader of the Resistance, and we come to be at loggerheads in this movie, but he’s somebody you can definitely believe has become the leader of the new sort of scavenger military,” Bale remarks.

In this past weekend's New York Times, there was an awesome interview with Quentin Tarantino in T Mag.

Whats it say? For starters, Tarantino is quick to admit that "Inglorious Basterds" is indeed the hardest film he’s ever made. From a director who says that he's croak to make his films perfect, this may not come as a big shock. Given that IB is a WWII epic, clocks in at over 2 hours and 30 minutes, and was cast and shot in time for this month’s Cannes, that statement may be true.

What else does Q say? Hold on to your hats...

"I wanted to have a masterpiece before the decade’s out."

Hmmmm, does he consider "Inglourious Basterds to be his only masterpiece this decade. In the Lounge's estimation, both volumes of Kill Bill reached those heights.

On a more curious note, Q also says that he’s working on a 20-page review of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, a film he’s quite passionate and protective over. Wonder why THAT is? And looking back as a member of the jury at Cannes in 2004, he remains pleased with awarding Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 the Palm d’Or.

Judging from the trailer, Tetro looks and feels like a film from 60 years ago. The black and white cinematography is absolutely gorgeous.

The plot: Fresh faced and naive, 17-year-old Bennie arrives in Buenos Aires to search for his older brother who has been missing for more than a decade. The family had emigrated from Italy to Argentina, but with the great musical success of their father Carlo, an acclaimed symphony conductor, the family moved from Argentina to New York. When Bennie finds his brother, the volatile and melancholy poet Tetro, he is not at all what he expected. In the course of staying with Tetro and his girlfriend Miranda, the two brothers grapple with the haunting experiences of their shared past.

The film stars Vincent Gallo, Alden Ehrenreich, Maribel Verdu, Klaus Maria Brandauer and Carmen Maura.

Big props to USA TODAY, who managed to snag a first peek at Iron Man 2.

It's closer than we think. A sequel to last summer's blockbuster, which began shooting a mere three weeks ago will open next May and takes place just six months after Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark revealed his identity as Iron Man.

Interestingly, the development is playing out with unexpected results, says director Jon Favreau. "How many superheroes are open about their true identities?" he asked in USA Today. "We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences — in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore."

Even though he's sending dispatches via Twitter (one of the few Hollywood directors to utilize the technology) from the set. He hopes to have all other details locked down. "It's never easy with summer movies, but we're trying to keep as much a surprise as possible," he says.

What exactly does THAT mean? Well, I'd guess we're getting no new dirt on replacing Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle, or how the crime-fighting team S.H.I.E.L.D. will ultimately come together. Or how he'll work in new characters. Among those signed on for this go-round are Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer.

Favreau also said that tackling the franchise a second time is easier because he knows the landscape. Something else would help, too: "I really enjoyed when we were a dark horse and no one knew much about us. ... I hope we can find that place again."

LIGHTS DIM IN VEGAS: DANNY GANS DEAD at 52

Sin City showman Danny Gans, 52, an impressionist who sold more tickets on the Strip than the Rat Pack or Elvis Presley, died early Friday, says his his manager.

Gans, best known for his touching impersonation of entertainer George Burns, began a five-year headline gig at tycoon Steve Wynn's Wynn Las Vegas hotel in February. Prior to that, he spent 11 years at the Mirage.

he earned the coveted Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year honors 11 years in a row in the reader poll conducted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal but interestingly was not well known beyond Las Vegas.

The cause of death was unknown, although Wikipedia hints that he may have had a heart attack because he had some shortness of breath. Gans's manager Chip Lightman expressed his shock at the impressionist's passing. "The guy was healthy as an ox," he said. "I spoke to Steve Wynn several times this morning and both of us were shocked. I was with Danny the day before yesterday. Healthy as an ox. I mean, all he ate was egg whites and spinach and worked out religiously."

Gans, a great physical specimen, was a former minor league baseball player who turned to performing after a career-ending injury. He appeared as a player in the film "Bull Durham" and found success in his 1995 one-man show in New York before moving the next year to Las Vegas.
He is survived by a wife and three children.

Via Slashfilm: "A trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Homes premiered this morning at ShoWest. This is definitely not the Sherlock Holmes you’ve ever seen before. I was surprised at how comical the footage was. It felt a little like the humor of Disney’s Pirates of the Carribbean films. Fans of Ritchie might be interested to know that the director’s stylish cinematography was definitely intact. During a sequence showing the barenuckle pitfight, Holmes’ punches are executed in a slow motion style reminiscent of the video game Fight Night. And while the film isn’t set in modern day, the trailer had a very contemporary in-you-face edit. Of course, I’m not sure if this was just a trailer cut for ShoWest, or if it might be an early version of the actual theatrical trailer. Some people commented on Robert Downey Jr’s accent, which wasn’t too believable, but I’m sure in the context of the movie it won’t really matter."

Via CNN: Altovise Davis, the widow of entertainer Sammy Davis Jr., has died. She was 65.

Davis died Saturday at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, said her publicist, Amy Malone. She had been admitted two days earlier after suffering a stroke.

Davis, a dancer and actress from Brooklyn, New York, met Sammy Davis Jr. on the set of the musical "Golden Boy" in London in 1967. The couple married three years later.

It was Sammy Davis Jr.'s third marriage. The couple remained together until he died of throat cancer in 1990.

The couple had an adopted son.

Funeral services will be held in Burbank, California, with the date and time to be announced later.

Sammy Davis Jr., himself a musician, was famous for being part of the Rat Pack, which included Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

OK... lemme just say that first off, I'm not a sci-fi guy. I'm not a fantasy guy or a cyberpunk dude... But that said, this new trailer for J.J. Abrams new "Star Trek" film looks friggin' awesome. The actioner is essentially a chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members.

I wasn't stoked for it initially but as the trailers were rleased I must say, it looks incredible.

Is there a better vision than a young James T. Kirk looking at the massive USS Enterprise as it's being built?

Public Enemies is a 2009 film adaptation of Bryan Burrough's book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34 directed by Michael Mann.

The crime drama is set during the Great Depression with the focus on the FBI agent Melvin Purvis' attempt to stop criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd. Christian Bale will play FBI agent Purvis, Johnny Depp will play Dillinger, and Marion Cotillard will play Dillinger's girlfriend Billie Frechette. Principal photography began in Columbus, Wisconsin on March 17, 2008 and wrapped in Chicago, Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and several other places in Wisconsin the end of June 2008, including the famous Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, the actual location of a 1934 gun fight between Dillinger and the FBI. Some parts of the film were shot in Crown Point, Indiana, the town where Dillinger was imprisoned and subsequently escaped from jail.

Via Inside Gaming: Maybe that iPhone user isn't just taking calls

Users of iPhones beware -- state gaming agents are watching you.

California gaming authorities tipped off their Nevada counterparts to a blackjack card-counting program that can be used on either the Apple iPhone or the Apple iPod Touch portable music player.

"The program calculates the true count and does it significantly more accurately," according to a Gaming Control Board memorandum sent to casino operators last week warning of the electronic device.

Card counting is not illegal in Nevada casinos. However, using a device to aid in the counting of cards is considered a felony under Nevada laws governing cheating, control board member Randy Sayre said.

Gamblers using the iPhone card-counting program can be detained by casino operators and arrested by state gaming agents.

While the sequel to "The Dark Knight" is just in the beginning stages of development, Warner Bros is already looking much further down the line. During today’s Time Warner earnings call, it was reported on the web that CEO Jeff Bewkes compared the Batman series to the Harry Potter film franchise, saying that they hope to release a long line of sequels.

“We look at Harry Potter. It’s fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn’t the case in the years ago. Warners has more tentpoles as an on-going strategy that very much lifts its distribution and performance. We think that’s going to hold up our slate in the 2009 - 2010 period. We’ve got four more big tentpoles coming this year.”

The Internal Revenue Service has expanded its investigation into a former Fry's executive, with agents seizing financial records and interviewing employees from at least one Las Vegas casino last week.

Federal agents on Thursday visited the Venetian, a casino and hotel along the Vegas Strip which Ausaf "Omar" Siddiqui, 43, had frequented, IRS spokeswoman Arlette Lee confirmed Monday.

She declined further comment, saying the search warrants have been sealed.

It happened on the set after a director of photography accidentally ruined a scene by walking onto the set.
